CONSTRUCTION VARIABILITY - CASE STUDIES. PROCEEDINGS, SIXTH CONFERENCE, ROAD ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION OF ASIA AND AUSTRALASIA, 4-10 MARCH 1990, KUALA LUMPUR, VOLUMES 1 TO 5 AND POST CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

This paper reviews work on the variability of construction material and on constructed road works. It details studies of the variability of layer thickness and surface levels and shape, the variability of asphaltic concrete mix properties and the variability of compaction of unbound material. For each of these properties, the paper also discusses the implication of the variability in construction specifications and proposes statistical approaches to compliance testing suitable for end result specifications. As a consequence of these studies, suggestions regarding some construction processes and quality control procedures, which are necessary to achieve different job standards, are given. For the covering entry of the conference see IRRD 823206. (Author/TRRL)
