MAINTENANCE AND MANAGEMENT OF URBAN EXPRESSWAYS IN JAPAN. PROCEEDINGS, SIXTH CONFERENCE, ROAD ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION OF ASIA AND AUSTRALASIA, 4-10 MARCH 1990, KUALA LUMPUR, VOLUMES 1 TO 5 AND POST CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

This paper describes the techniques for maintaining and managing the Metropolitan Expressway as a representative urban expressway in Japan. The majority of the sections of the Metropolitan Expressway are elevated. The contents and methods for daily inspection and for detailed periodic inspection conducted for each structure type -- such as concrete structures and steel structures -- are described first. Then, structural repairs based on inspections are introduced. Introduced at the end of this paper is an outline of the data management system for maintenance and repair, which is currently under development.
