IMPROVEMENTS OF BUS DRIVER'S WORKING ENVIRONMENT. HOURS OF WORK AND WORK PLANNING

BAETTRE ARBETSMILJOE FOER BUSSFOERARNA. DELRAPPORT 2: ARBETSTIDER OCH TJAENSTEKONSTRUKTIONER

Working times in local traffic show great variation. Work is either scheduled for different fixed times of the day or it may be scheduled the previous day depending on requirements. In Stockholm some routes operate 24 hours; night duty is performed by staff permanently on nights. There is also split-time working on weekdays, partly in the morning and partly in the afternoon/evening. Daily scheduling is unpopular due to inability to plan leisure time, and is the cause of increased sickness absence. Research into working times is based on biological rhythms. The best biological adaptation occurs when working analysis show no appreciable difference in health and wellbeing between permanent and variable working times. It seems however that the combination of daily scheduling and split working causes difficulties due to tiredness, effect of work on social life, etc. The most critical variable regarding working times is whether one is satisfied with one's working conditions. If this is not the case, a combination with other variables can cause an increased frequency of complaints. It is essential therefore to try and fit working times to the wishes of the drivers.
