THE TGV SYSTEM: A TECHNICAL, COMMERCIAL, FINANCIAL, AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC RENAISSANCE OF THE RAIL MODE

This paper is the result of a one-year independent study conducted under the auspices of Reid Hall, Columbia University Programs in Paris, as part of a Study Abroad Program in which the University of Pennsylvania participates. The topic of the study was a comprehensive review and analysis of the Train a Grande Vitesse, the TGV high-speed rail system in France. The goal of this paper is to give the whole picture of the TGV by presenting its important characteristics and impacts as part of a system. The contents of the paper are presented in the following four chapters: (1) A technological and operational approach to the TGV; (2) Transforming the commercial policy and financial success of rail services; (3) The TGV system, while serving the needs of society, also has the potential to mold them; and (4) Versatility in space and time. A glossary and bibliography conclude the paper.
