INTEGRATION OF CAD AND MATERIAL CONTROL. IN: PREPARING FOR CONSTRUCTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY, PROCEEDINGS OF CONSTRUCTION CONGRESS '91, SPONSORED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS IN COOPERATION WITH THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING ENGINEERS AND THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, APRIL 13-16, 1991

The purpose of this paper is to address the relationship between CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings and the material control software. Computer generated drawings have the ability to hold information pertaining to the actual material requirements in the content of the drawing. How the information gets placed in the drawing or database will affect the amount of time savings that can be gained by using material extraction. Different types of material control software are discussed and the concepts of cataloging and spec checking are addressed.
