TRANSPORT CORRIDORS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA - DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGIONAL MODEL. IN: PROCEEDINGS OF THE THIRTY-THIRD ANNUAL MEETING, TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH FORUM, OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 2, 1991, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
This paper shows how the application of a Regional Distribution Cost Model to the transport network of southern Africa can be used to project the relative efficiency of the transport corridors over a ten-year period. This relative efficiency will incorporate the likely improvements in transport efficiency, from the perspective of the transport user, which would result from the current rehabilitation program. This perspective of the transport user is of greatest importance as it requires the quantification of service quality elements of transport, such as time, risk of loss and damage, storage costs, loading and unloading costs as well as the interest cost of holding goods during the time in transit.
