SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR STEEL HIGHWAY BRIDGES . RATIONAL FABRICATION SPECIFICATIONS FOR STEEL STRUCTURES. PAPERS PRESENTED AT A SEMINAR HELD IN LONDON, JULY 13, 1988

This paper describes the requirement for steel highway bridges contained in the Department of Transport's "Specification for Highway Works" (See IRRD 803111). It also emphasizes the fact that the process of rationalisation never stops, that British Standards are constantly being updated, and that clients must not only be aware of this but be prepared to update, modify and rationalise their specification requirements accordingly. The specification requirements for steel highway structures are contained in the series 1800 clauses which form part of part 6. These rely to a large extent on BS 5400 part 6 (1980) (see IRRD 264409). The format adopted for the British Standard with requirements for materials, workmanship, inspection and testing following in succession is similar to that of the earlier BS153. Foreign steels are acceptable provided their properties meet the requirements of BS4360. The standard introduces and attaches importance to requirements which limit laminar defects in vulnerable areas of component subject to tensile stresses in the through thickness direction. The point is emphasized that this standard refers directly to others (26 in all) which in turn refer to further standards. If one takes into account the BSI program of periodic review, rationalization and re-issue, a main "calling up" British Standard is likely to be out of date with respect to some reference standards. Examples of where this occurs are provided, including other Department of Transport design standards and draft Eurostandard EN 10025 "Steel products for general structural applications". (TRRL)
