FOUNDATIONS AT THE TOP OF SLOPES. DE MELLO VOLUME; A TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR DR. VICTOR F. B. DE MELLO IN HONOR OF HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING IN LATIN AMERICA

Spread footings located in or near slopes have an ultimate capacity which is reduced in comparison to footings located in flat, horizontal ground. In this paper, three objectives are given: (1) to describe how to quantify the reduction of bearing capacity; (2) to compare studies made on this topic, by the Gdansk Technical University in Poland, the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario, Canada, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation; and (3) to provide information that can be used for design purposes.
