RETAINING WALL ALTERNATIVES - TECHNO-ECONOMICS. REINFORCED SOIL AND GEOTEXTILES, PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOTEXTILES CONFERENCE HELD AT THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BOMBAY, INDIA, DECEMBER 8-9, 1988

During the past twenty years many innovative techniques such as reinforced earth technique using metal strips for reinforcements, as well as geotextiles and polymer grids have been successfully employed in the construction of steep to vertical earthfills and have been found to be cost effective in many developed countries. The paper presents typical results relating to design of reinforced earth walls for varying backfill quality and emphasises the need for taking up full scale field trials in India, for evaluating the techniques as an alternative to conventional retaining walls.
