REINFORCED GRAVEL FOUNDATIONS FOR BOX CULVERT AND SEWAGE PIPELINE CONSTRUCTIONS ON SOFT AND SUBSIDING GROUND. REINFORCED SOIL AND GEOTEXTILES, PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOTEXTILES CONFERENCE HELD AT THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BOMBAY, INDIA, DECEMBER 8-9, 1988

This paper presents an alternative to pile foundation on soft and subsiding ground consisting of reinforced gravel. Full scale field tests were done on sewage pipeline reinforced foundation. Laboratory tests consisting of pullout and load tests were performed. The pullout tests were done using new equipment designed and manufactured for this study. The Tensar geogrid reinforcements consisted of GM1, SR2 and SS35. The results from the field test and the laboratory load tests are also presented. The data obtained from the pullout tests were used in the finite element (FEM) model on actual culvert construction on reinforced gravel foundation. The reinforced foundations resulted in lower differential settlements and cheaper construction costs. For covering abstract of the conference, see IRRD 836241. (Author/TRRL)
