FATIGUE OF ASPHALT; CRACK INITIATION - ENERGY DISSIPATION. WORKING DAYS ON ROAD ENGINEERING 1990, PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE HELD IN EDE, THE NETHERLANDS, MAY 9-10, 1990. PART 1

VERMOEIING VAN ASFALT; SCHEURINITIATIE - ENERGIEDISSIPATIE

The fatigue process of materials can be divided into two subsequent stages. In the first the initial fatigue strength of the material is affected. At the end of this stage (local) micro cracks have initiated (crack initiation stage). Then these micro cracks start growing (crack growing stage). By dynamic fourpoint bending tests with a "complex" prescribed strain signal, it is shown that the fatigue life is not determined by the height of the strain signal alone. However, the observed fatigue life (until crack initiation) can be explained if the mean dissipated energy per cycle is taken as the relevant parameter in the fatigue process. The consequence of this observation may be that fatigue of the material (crack initiation) will also occur if only "push" stresses are applied. However, for the growth process of the micro cracks "pull" stresses remain necessary. The paper ends with a number of statements which in the opinion of the authors can be deduced from the observations. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 836802. (Author/TRRL)
