THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERFORMANCE RELATED TESTS. BITUMINOUS ROADS IN THE 1990S. SEMINAR PAPERS. DUBLIN, 1 NOVEMBER, 1990

The main product of the Strategic Highway Research Program's asphalt program will be improved specifications for asphalt binders, and an asphalt-aggregate mixture analysis system (AAMAS) incorporating accelerated performance-related tests. This paper describes the AAMAS system and the new testing methodologies that are being developed. Performance-related testing and measuring of asphalt-aggregate interactions and mixtures are covered, as well as such aspects as the following: asphalt properties versus performance (literature survey), development of accelerated performance tests, fatigue, rutting, aging, thermal cracking, water sensitivity, stiffness, criteria for the selection of the candidate tests, binder specification tests, AAMAS tests, research test procedures, and improved types of bituminous materials.
