RISK PERCEPTION AND POLICY PREFERENCES OF FIRE CHIEFS: A SURVEY OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ISSUES. STATE AND LOCAL ISSUES IN TRANSPORTATION OF HAZARDOUS WASTE MATERIALS: TOWARDS A NATIONAL STRATEGY. PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TRANSPORTATION, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, MAY 14-16, 1990

This paper presents the results of a survey of Connecticut fire chiefs and discusses how their perceptions of risk affect their attitudes towards risk preparedness and risk management practices. The results indicate that support for aggressive intervention on the part of local governments in care of future landfills that can produce significant quantities of leachate should be encouraged.
