THE METRO MANILA LRT SYSTEM: ITS FUTURE . RAIL MASS SYSTEMS FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONFERENCE ORGANISED BY THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS, LONDON, OCTOBER 9-10, 1989
Construction of the metro system in Manila began in late 1987, and commercial operation of line no. 1 began in May 1985. A series of negotiations had been held between the Light Rail Transit Authority and Metro Inc resulting in a ten year contract for the LRT system, in June 1984. The terms of this contract are given in the article. Financial performance of the LRTA has been poor, and figures are given for the financial years for 1984 to 1988. The government in Manila is currently seeking solutions to this, including tendering out the operations to other private investors. (TRRL)
