The method of reporting pavement classification number (PCN) values described in this paper is based on falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements. The procedure follows closely the recommendations in "Aerodrome Design Manual, Part 3, Pavements, 1983, ICAO". The elastic moduli are determined from the FWD-deflections using back-calculation techniques, also taking the non-linearity of the subgrade into account. The E-values are then adjusted to the climatic parameters of the design condition, and possible static or semi-static conditions. Applicable criteria for allowable strains/stresses/deflections, for the region in question, is then applied. The program is then used to determine the PCN-value (single wheel load with tyre pressure 1.25 MPa), and corresponding number of repetitions which exactly meets the design criteria by using an iterative process. This becomes the PCN-value for the point measurement. The PCN-value of the movement area or apron is then determined as the mean PCN-value or, if the area is non-uniform, the mean PCN-value for the weakest subsection, as defined by ICAO. The subgrade category is determined from the seasonal adjusted subgrade E-values. (TRRL)
