LONG-TERM STUDY OF STRUCTURAL DEFLECTION OF TEST ROAD . THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS, NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, JULY 3-5 1990. VOLUMES 1-2

The purpose of this long term study is to ascertain to what extent the structural deterioration of the pavement calculated at the design stage corresponds to actual deterioration in practice. The test site, a trunk road, was constructed in 1984 and consisted of sections with various different structures. These were: (a) sections made up in accordance with existing Danish standards; and (b) two test sections which contained a reduced amount of asphalt and in which the base layer consisted mainly of crushed stone macadam. One section contained modified binder (Chem Crete modifier, added in the ratio of 1:11) and the other did not. The following measurements were taken: (a) the theoretical structural deterioration of each section was determined by measurements taken 4 times a year using a Phoenix falling weight deflectometer; (b) bitumen hardening of core samples taken in the first year, and again after 5-6 years. Penetration and softness points were determined from these measurements, and plotted against time; (c) fatigue tests were undertaken using 50 x 90 cm samples taken after 2 years. These tests determined the modulus of elasticity by means of bend/stretch tests using a method developed by Shell. Traffic load and rainfall were also measured and recorded. It was found that the addition of Chem Crete Modifier had no influence upon either penetration or the modulus of elasticity, and therefore none on the bearing capacity of the pavement. The traditionally designed pavement had considerably longer structural life than the untraditional test sections, and is even longer than forecast. The affect of rainfall depends upon the weather conditions: heavy precipitation after a dry period is far more damaging than constant rainfall. (TRRL)
