ELDERLY PEOPLE IN TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT . FOR ALL SAFETY; CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF TRAFFIC SAFETY

OUDEREN IN HET VERKEER

The average age of the Dutch population is still getting higher. More and more elderly people participate in traffic. An analysis carried out by the Dutch institute for road safety research SWOV shows that the lack of traffic safety for the elderly is mainly caused by: (1) the loss of physical and mental functions; (2) decreasing mobility; and (3) physical vulnerability. It is important to break through this vicious circle when we know which factors mainly determine the lack of traffic safety for the elderly. All people engaged in traffic and transport policy have to coordinate their efforts. Not only elderly people but also other road users and their pressure-groups; not only the central government, but also the local authorities. A coordinated effort should be made to put together age of measures which can guarantee the safety and the mobility of elderly people in the future. (TRRL)
