MODELLING OF PEDESTRIAN FLOWS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF THE URBAN TRAFFIC . PROCEEDINGS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMPROVED SAFETY, TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, FEBRUARY 20-23, 1989

In urban traffic planning, pedestrian traffic does not receive as much attention as vehicular traffic. However, the pedestrian traffic -mostly from the point of view of safety -has always been the most important urban traffic mode. Thus, an interactive design and program system has been elaborated. With its help, the walking of the pedestrians can be correctly followed. Principal elements of the model are: (1) simulation of the pedestrian flow. The following basic formulae are used: p=v.d; v=a-b.d; p=ad-bd; p=flow rate, pedestrians per "corridor"width/m/per sec; v=speed/m/sec./;d=density/ped./m/a and b= characteristic flow parameters; (2) the program system, which consists of two main parts: a program describes the layout of the pedestrian facility for example an underpass, and which handles the input and the output data; and programs simulating the pedestrian flow. The necessary data for simulating a given facility are: the traffic volume matrix among the entry and exist points; the "A" and "B" characteristic flow parameters; the variation in the pattern of the traffic flow with time; and the layout of the pedestrian facility. The program system runs on ibm-pc computers. Its first part is written in basic, its second part in FORTRAN. The advantages of the model are as follows : the entire design process can be closely followed; the level of service can be designed and calculated; and the designer's work is greatly aided by the visualisation of the results .
