THE NEED FOR BRIGHTER ROAD SIGNING TO FULFILL FUTURE TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS . PROCEEDINGS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMPROVED SAFETY, TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, FEBRUARY 20-23, 1989

National accident statistics around the world indicate that road signs and markings are in desperate need of modernization and upgrading, using materials with higher performance levels. In almost all countries where motorization is already well developed, over half the driving population will be aged over 45 years by the turn of the century, which means that the road signing will have to be designed in such a way that they are clearly visible to all these drivers at all times, under all circumstances, both by day and night. Hence the urgent need to design brighter, highly visible signing systems. This is possible today, and this paper illustrates the essential elements needed to obtain a swift, economical and efficient road signing system through well planned management plans based on solid inventory data of the existing "road furniture." Maintenance programmes calling for thorough updating and replacement operations are the key to rapidly obtaining a road signing system with a high level of performance and for the best possible financial return and which will fulfill the authorities'needs into the next century.
