FIAT AUTO SAFETY CENTER PRESENTATION . PROCEEDINGS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMPROVED SAFETY, TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, FEBRUARY 20-23, 1989

A brief historical survey of the research undertaken to improve passenger cars safety is given in this paper. The geometric phase which aims to limit intrusion into the passenger compartment is discussed first, followed by a description of the biomechanical phase, which reproduces the stress undergone by a vehicle in a real accident in order to determine the degree of protection afforded a passenger. Finally, the article describes current research, the aim of which is to limit the task of the driver to the simple action of choosing the direction and speed of travel. Automatic devices, programs and electronics will do the detailed work. This research is a pan-european project involving thirteen nations and has been named "prometheus, programme for safety".
