STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE CRITERIA FOR CEMENT TREATED NATURAL GRAVEL ROAD BASE MATERIALS. FIFTH NATIONAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT ENGINEERING CONFERENCE, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 24-29 SEPTEMBER, 1989

The (New South Wales) Department of Main Roads' specification for the Supply and Delivery of Base and Sub-Base Materials for Surfaced Road Pavements (MR Form No 744) precludes the use of natural gravels in the base layer of main road pavements unless they meet stringent structural performance criteria. However, there is scope within the specification for improving the structural performance of natural gravels by cement modification or stabilisation techniques. This paper demonstrates that cement modification of sub-base quality natural gravels can produce a road base material that complies with MR Form No 744 and ARRB Research Report ARR 150.
