DETERMINING THE LEAST COST METHOD OF TRANSPORTING BULK COMMODITIES WITH COMPETING ROAD AND RAIL POSSIBILITIES. PAPER PRESENTED AT THE AUSTRALASIAN TRANSPORT RESEARCH FORUM; PART 2

A mixed integer linear programming model was developed to determine the least social cost method of transporting bulk commodities. The model was applied to the problem of transporting export coal from the Hunter and Newcastle Coalfields to the Port of Newcastle. Transport options included road and rail or a road/rail combination. The results illustrated the comparative advantage of rail in transporting bulk commodities. The approach used in this analysis has application to other problems involving determination of the least social cost method for transporting commodities. (Author/TRRL)
