AIR POLLUTION AND NOISE FROM ROAD VEHICLES . TRANSPORTATION POLICY AND THE ENVIRONMENT. ECMT MINISTERIAL SESSION

The purposes of this document are to summarise the current importance of motor vehicles as a cause of noise and air pollution problems today, to review the efforts underway to bring about improvements, and to discuss environmental implications of continuing growth of traffic. The paper is presented in 6 sections: (1) introduction; (2) regulation of noise and exhaust emissions from motor vehicles; (3) effectiveness of exhaust emission and noise standards; (4) methods of controlling vehicle emissions; (5) methods of controlling vehicle noise, and (6) implications of emission control legislation.
