FOUNDATION PROBLEMS IN NONCONSOLIDATED FILL . PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS. INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY, 20-25 OCTOBER 1986
The results of laboratory and field investigations performed in nonconsolidated clay fill approximately 30 m high are presented in this paper. In order to study the possibility of applying shallow foundations, several field load tests with square foundation of width B = 1,0 m have been carried out. In the first group field load tests have been performed on the natural soil. In the second group of tests the soil was completely saturated. In the third group of field load tests the existing soil was replaced by compacted gravel and in the last one the gravel layer was reinforced by steel bars. On the basis of the registered values of settlement during field load tests, the ultimate bearing capacity has been determined by Van der Veen's and Mazurkiewicz's procedures. In such a way it was possible to compare the obtained values of the ultimate bearing capacity of soil and to confirm the favourable effect of gravel layer overlying soft soil.(A) The French title of this paper is: "Problemes de fondations dans les remblais non consolides".
