ENGINEERING-GEOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE LATE EOCENE CLAY ROCKS RELATIVE TO CIVIL ENGINEERING . PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS. INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY, 20-25 OCTOBER 1986

This paper presents the engineering geological characteristics of fresh and weathered Upper Eocene sandy-clay rock varieties which are common within the Alpine orogen zone. The geology of Tbilisi, the capital of the Georgian SSR, is discussed as an example of the area. Fresh clay rock varieties are notable for rather high strength indices, though shortly after rock stripping the latter decrease abruptly. Thus, specific coherence becomes nearly one tenth as great as its initial value. All these must be borne in mind at laying foundations within such clay rocks. The French title of this paper is: "Aspects de l'ingenierie geologiques dans l'evaluation des roches argileuses de l'Eocene inferieur en relation avec le genie civil." (TRRL)
