A STUDY OF THE STATISTICAL THEORY FOR THE FAILURE OF BRITTLE ROCKS . PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SCALE EFFECTS IN ROCK MASSES, LOEN, NORWAY, JUNE 7-8 1990

This paper introduces the Markov theory to the micro-process of cracks in the brittle rock and has derived out the crack density function associated with crack size a and time t. Meanwhile a statistical distribution of brittle fracture has been proposed which is based on the non-weakest link hypothesis and is more applicable. A case study about granite in the quasi-triaxial compression shows that the approach presented is valid. (Author/TRRL)
