THE FORTH BRIDGES . DEVELOPMENTS IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING. PROCEEDINGS OF THE FORTH RAIL BRIDGE CENTENARY CONFERENCE, HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY, ENDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, AUGUST 21-23, 1990. VOLUMES 1 AND 2
The Forth Bridges are among the most famous bridges in the World. Indeed on completion in 1890 the Rail Bridge was described as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Its two clear spans were over 3 1/2 times as big as any similar bridge that had been built at that time. The Road Bridge was completed in 1964 and was the largest bridge to be built outside the USA. Both bridges were major milestones in the development of Bridge Engineering. The paper describes the design and construction of both bridges and highlights the developments in structural engineering achieved in the construction of both these structures. (Author/TRRL)
