OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS INVOLVED IN TELEMATICS FOR TRAFFIC AND SETTLEMENT. A TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT . TELEMATICS. TRANSPORTATION AND SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT. PROCEEDINGS OF AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ORGANIZED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE CENTER FOR TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING, DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, HELD IN THE NETHERLANDS, APRIL 14-15, 1988

There has always been a tendency to underestimate the effects of new technologies, and transitions from one era to the next have taken place largely by chance. This contribution, based on the MANTO research project, examines possible trends in telematics, looking mainly at their impact on tansport and settlement. But also studying their effects on society, the economy, and the environment. The rapid spread of new applications of telematics provides opportunities as well as risks. Telematics can be used to effect large scale decentralization and small scale mingling of functions in towns and villages, and for the more rational management of, or substitutions for, transport. Both help to conserve finite land and energy sources and to bring about the reduction of pollution so urgently needed. At the same time, use should be made of the potential of telematics for improving the employment situation in all sectors of the economy and educational opportunities throughout the country. Finally, applications of telematiscs that counteract tendencies towards social isolation should be developed and promoted. (Author/TRRL)
