NO-BUMP CONCRETE PAVING

The contractor is placing portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) for the Superstition Freeway Extension near Mesa, Arizona, with an average ride index of under 1 in./mile. The new pavement far surpasses the state's smoothness specifications. The Arizona Department of Transportation accepts deviations from smoothness (in cumulative 500ths of an in.) up to 7 in./mile, but pays incentive bonuses of 20 cents for each in. the index is lowered. A dollar per yd is offered for ride indexes which come in at or under 2 in./mile. The contractor has earned in excess of $300,000 for all the mainline, traffic lane PCCP on the 11-mile extension. The contractor used a new CMI SP30 ST Auto Grader and two new, modified SF-500 pavers to achieve the smoothness.
