ALTERNATIVE FREIGHT CAR MAINTENANCE POLICIES WITH ATTRACTIVE RELIABILITY/COST RELATIONSHIPS
In this paper, rail industry maintenance policies are assessed and compared with several possible alternatives. The alternatives are each based upon the application of statistical methods to failure data already collected by most freight car owners under the Car Repair Billing system managed by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). By use of a simulation model, it is shown that car owners should consider alternatives to the current policies.
