ENGINEERING FOR MAGLEV AND HIGH-SPEED RAIL

The article discusses the two different rail systems proposed for the United States - conventional high-speed steel-wheel-on-steel-rail or magnetic levitation. The radically different designs pose differing engineering challenges. The variety of studies underway or in planning to evaluate the potential for maglev systems are outlined.
