The pull-out testing method of determining skin friction coefficient between strip material and soil gives more closely realistic values as compared to the shear box method. This testing method, the author believes, reasonably represents the actual conditions of friction mobilization between the strip and soil in the reinforced earth structures. At low normal pressure or overburden pressure, the apparent coefficient of skin friction decreases with increasing normal pressure. The high value of apparent coefficient of skin friction at low normal pressure is believed to be due to the dilatancy, arching, geometry of the strip, boundary conditions, rigidity of the facing panel and undulations in the strip. The values of apparent coefficient of skin friction of the strip embedded in the dense soil give higher values than the one embedded in the loose soil.
