This is discussion of a paper of the above title by S. Prapaharan, J.L. Chameau, A.G. Altscheffl, and R.D. Holtz published in Vol. 116, No 1 (January 1990) issue of this journal. The discusser draws attention to important features not addressed by the authors of the paper. The conclusions of the paper should be viewed in the context of the study performed and in conjunction with other published literature on the subject. It is noted that the modulus computed from the pressuremeter test results is the apparent modulus, and describes the discusser's examination of the effect of the thickness of disturbed zone on the shear modulus. It is also noted that the large change of geometry undergone by the soil surrounding the pressuremeter probes upon application of pressure necessitates the consideration of nonlinear geometric behavior. The discussion is followed by a closure by the authors.
