MODEL FOR CAPACITY OF SINGLE PILES IN SAND USING FUZZY SETS

A model for estimating ultimate capacity of single piles in sand is described in the paper. The model applies fuzzy-set theory in an attempt to merge the existing, semiempirical quantitative methods with qualitative information relevant to pile capacity. Qualitative information such as quality of input data and predicting methods are assessed and incorporated into the new model. These methods are used in the computation process for estimating the ultimate capacity. The computer program PCFS (Wey and Juang 1987) is used in the prediction. The program is described and discussed, and problem examples are presented.
