STATISTICAL EVALUATION OF STRENGTH OF STEEL BEAM COLUMNS
This paper introduces work by Japanese researchers and reviews the Japanese research trend with respect to the steel beam-column. The strength characteristics of steel beam-columns are discussed by statistically evaluating the data collected from previous studies. The strength provisions given for steel beam columns in the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) specification are calibrated against the data collected. It was found that the experimental strength was 16% larger on the average than the predicted strength, with the coefficient of variation as 0.10. The difference between the experimental and predicted strengths was smallest for beam columns subjected to uniform moment and largest for those bent in double curvature.
