A CONTRIBUTION TO THE DETERMINATION OF THE ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION OF DRAINAGE SURFACINGS

A method is proposed for calculating the mechanical characteristics of open textured bituminous mixtures by means of simple and common laboratory tests. The procedure synthesizes the mechanical behaviour of the mixture, assuming, within Mohr's general theory, a parabolic intrinsic curve. The results of simple cpmpression and indirect tensile tests on open and closed textured mixtures, are compared with those obtained from the Coulomb bilateral formulation. It is shown that the parabolic curve is more suitable for determining the angle of internal friction of open textured surfacings. Test results are shown in tables and graphs. (TRRL)
