POROUS ASPHALT ON DUTCH VAN BRIENENOORD BRIDGE: MODIFIED BITUMEN RECOMMENDED
ZEER OPEN ASFALT OP VAN BRIENENOORDBRUG: GEMODIFICEERD BITUMEN AANBEVOLEN
The Dutch "Rijkswaterstaat" has done research into the possibility of using a porous asphalt concrete wearing course on the orthotropic steel bridge deck of the Van Brienenoord bridge in Rotterdam. A literature search gave information about the conditions such a construction needs to fulfill. On the basis of this a construction has been designed, consisting of a steel bridge deck, on which successively a primer/epoxy layer, a bituminous membrane, a mastic asphalt layer, a second bituminous membrane, and a porous asphalt concrete wearing course are constructed. To gain practical experience beforehand an experimental construction was put on a steel bridge near Arnhem. In the laboratory the fatigue characteristics, the rutting and flow stability, and the impact of the type of bitumen used, were investigated. The research and experiments showed that porous asphalt concrete wearing courses are technically acceptable alternatives for the conventional mastic asphalt wearing courses on orthotropic steel bridge decks. To resist ageing and to guarantee a good adhesion between bitumen and aggregate a modified bitumen must be applied in the wearing course. Winter maintenance needs special care. The construction as discussed in this article will be used on the new and existing part of the Van Brienenoord bridge. (TRRL)
