DUTCH DESIGN METHOD FOR CONCRETE BRICK PAVEMENTS

The working group D3 "Design of Small Element Pavements" of the Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW) has done research with the aim to draw up a simple design method for "element" pavements (concrete sett or brick pavements), taking into account the specific Dutch circumstances. Test sections have been constructed, consisting of concrete element pavements loaded by regular traffic and with a pavement structure usual for the Netherlands. Deflection measurements have been carried out, the results of which have been analysed with the finite element method. Rutting measurements have also been carried out. The results of both measurements have been analysed with the so-called progressive stiffening theory. Using these results, rutting calculations have been carried out for 84 different concrete brick pavements. Rutting has been taken as the design criterion and the design standard accepted is a characteristic rut depth (percentage of outliers 30) of 15 mm. The structure of the element pavements according to the design method developed on the basis of the investigations consists of a top layer of rectangular concrete bricks, and a base consisting either of a layer of sand, the "paving layer" or "Straatlaag", and a sand subgrade, or the "paving layer", an unbound stone roadbase, and a sand subgrade.
