STONE MASTIC ASPHALT ON HIGH-LOAD BEARING LOCATIONS

High-load bearing pavements require a high resistance to deformation of the wearing course. Because of this the bitumen content in the wearing course mixtures was strongly reduced in the past, which considerably shortened the service life. A mixture that meets the requirements of stability as well as durability is stone mastic asphalt. This bituminous mixture contains high percentages of chippings and bitumen. To prevent the bitumen from dripping out a cellulose fibre is added. In the Netherlands stone mastic asphalt is increasingly being used as a wearing course mixture. After a short discussion of the composition and the properties of the material a number of applications of stone mastic asphalt in high-load bearing locations in the Netherlands are considered, such as floors of storage depots, loading facilities, and industrial premises, factory floors, bus lanes, and pavements for military purposes. In these examples the pavement structure, the mix composition, and the experiences with the stone mastic asphalt are discussed. The practical experiences show that stone mastic asphalt is very appropriate to be used as a wearing course mixture for high-load bearing pavements. (TRRL)
