WILDLIFE FACILITIES NEAR ROADS

FAUNAVOORZIENINGEN BIJ WEGEN

Roads create a barrier between animal populations. The consequences of this barrier are that the animals are run over and that animal populations are separated, both of which can threaten their existence. Depending on the specific demands of the different animal species measures can be taken to reduce the barrier effect of roads. When new roads are constructed facilities can be included during the design stage. This is cheaper than taking measures afterwards. For both situations - new and existing roads - a number of measures are discussed in this paper. To reduce the risk of animals being run over game fences can be installed for instance. Game crossings and tunnels are important facilities to maintain the connections between animal habitats. Finally several facilities to encourage animals to cross engineering structures such as bridges are considered. (TRRL)
