Bauer Foundations are offering a package of in situ testing equipment which it has been using on its own contracts for 2 years. Faster and cheaper than borehole drilling, the facilities include rapid core penetration and dynamic probe test methods. In addition Bauer's mobile on site plate testing equipment will monitor settlement of proposed foundations and validate soil bearing capacity. A fully equipped laboratory for soil testing is also included. Bauer's approach is to sink one or two boreholes to establish the geological sequence and then drive a lot of probes between these to assess variability. The core penetrates and dynamic probe tests generate a lot of information and can cover a lot of ground. These tests could prove particularly useful on back filled sites being used for development for assessing conditions and checking the effectiveness of ground improvement techniques. Results come off the machines onto a computer printout and are easily understood. It is suggested that the package will be particularly useful for smaller contractors without in-house engineering expertise. (TRRL)
