ACOUSTICS. TEST CODE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF ACOUSTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND BARRIERS INSTALLED IN A FREE FIELD

ACOUSTIQUE. CODE D'ESSAI POUR LA DETERMINATION DE CARACTERISTIQUES ACOUSTIQUES D'ECRANS INSTALLES EN CHAMP LIBRE

This standard describes a method for measuring the intrinsic acoustic characteristics of sound barriers installed in a free acoustic field. The method is based on the use of a transient acoustic signal, and the results must therefore be analysed with the aid of techniques for converting a signal shown on a time scale into one on a frequency scale. The analyser used can be combined with any method for processing the results. The advantages of the equipment are: a) it can be operated on site with light equipment; b) it can be used to estimate the quantities of acoustic energy transferred by either transmission, reflection; c) the results of a measurement relate to the radiation from a limited fraction of the wall surface (about 2 square metres), which makes it possible to check both the uniformity of construction and certain acoustic properties of the barrier; and d) it can be used for both testing the characteristics of the modulus of a barrier before installation, and for carrying out in situ checks on the barrier when it is in place.
