Hitachi Zosen has introduced a new high-output steam turbine propulsion plant for ULCCs, VLCCs and high-speed container ships which they expect to "slash soaring fuel oil costs for the shipping industry." It is claimed that the new turbine plant will reduce operating costs considerably. For the new 500,000 dwt tankers will consume 9 percent less fuel than similar-sized vessels powered by conventional plants, when operated at a steam pressure of 60 kg//sq cm and at a steam temperature of 510 deg C. This will result in a savings of about 19 tons a day. The technological adaptions were made without changing the basic structure of the main turbine and main boiler, and without altering the basic design conditions of steam temperature and pressure.
