BICYCLE USE IN TRANSPORTATION. HOW TO COUNT IT AND WHICH FACTORS INFLUENCE IT

CYKELTRAFIKMAENGDER. HUR DE RAEKNAS OCH VAD SOM PAAVERKAR DEM

This project is part of a research program on the bicycle as a means of transportation carried out at the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering, Lunds University, Sweden. The project comprises two parts: one is the collection of bicycle travel statistics from several mid-size cities in Sweden, the other is the estimation of modal-split models (including bicycle) for cities of the same size. The modal-split models have been estimated from data collected through postal interviews of slightly more than 3000 persons living in the three Swedish cities Umeaa (in the north), Helsingborg and Malmoe (both in the south). The interviews were conducted in two or three residential areas in each city - one peripheral, one half-central and in Malmoe one central area. The data collection was carried out in one summer period and one winter period to allow an estimation of the climate effect on cycling. In the report the effect of some variables is discussed on the basis of earlier studies and an aggregate analysis of the data collected. The variables introduced are: age, sex, income, education, car competition, attitudes, travel times, waiting times, walking times, topography, bicycle lane availability. These variables have been tested in models in different combinations for different sub-samples. (Author/TRRL)
