SHEAR STRENGTH OF OPEN-WEB PLATE GIRDERS WITH INCLINED TENSION BARS

In this paper, an alternative open-web plate girder structural element with inclined tension bars is proposed that recognizes the substantial contribution of the post buckling tension field and flange plastic moment capacity to the shear strength of conventional plate girders with slenderness ratios in the range of practical applications. The details of the study are described in which parametric investigations with the computer implementation of the corresponding mathematical model indicate the existence of an optimal tendon inclination to maximize the shear capacity of the girder at collapse. The mathematical model was satisfactorily verified experimentally.
