DAMAGE ASSESSMENT IN CONCRETE USING QUANTITATIVE ACOUSTIC EMISSION

Theoretical background of quantitative acoustic emission (AE) is briefly reviewed in this paper. Both center notched and off-center-notched (OCN) concrete beams were loaded in a closed-loop test system. AE signals resulting from fracturing of concrete were recorded by an AE data acquisition system. After locating the AE sources, moment tensors representing the AE sources were recovered by deconvoluting the AE signals. The size, orientation, and mode of microcracks associated with AE events were then evaluated based on the moment tensor analysis. The details of the study are described and the results are discussed.
