The consolidation properties of very soft clays is discussed, and the paper proposes a method of analyzing the settlement data during the initial stage consolidation so as to allow an estimate of the subsequent consolidation. The paper shows the method to work for finite strain consolidation with nonhomogeneuus initial conditions and nonlinear properties. The method is particularly useful in the field. Once settlement data are available, it can be seen that behavior follows a hyperbolic pattern. The subsequent consolidation can then be predicted. If another load is applied, the method can be applied again. Thus it is useful for monitoring consolidation in the field even if the load is applied in stages. The method can also be used to estimate the coefficient of consolidation in the case of Terzaghi-type consolidation.
