BREAKING IN A NEW SPEC
A 1,847-ft-long, two-lane bridge is being constructed across the St. Lucie River from Stuart to Palm City, Florida. It is being built to Florida DOT specification 346, which requires up to 11 oz. of air per cu yd of concrete, as well as the use of fly ash to provide corrosion protection. The specification also demands that the materials supplier, prime contractor, and the Florida DOT all perform regular tests to be sure the mix's ingredients are in perfect proportion. Further details of the construction operations are provided in this article.
