TUNNELS PROVIDE UNDERSEA ACCESS TO NORWEGIAN ISLANDS
A $150 million privately funded bridge/tunnel/roadway link is being constructed off the shore of southeastern Norway. When completed late in 1992, the Rennesoy-Mainland Connection will provide fixed, reliable access from Randaberg to the islands of Bru, Sokn, Amoy, Mosteroy, and Rennesoy. The 30-km toll road includes nearly 11 km of 3-lane undersea tunnels. The Norwegian Roads Department designed the roadway and is overseeing its construction. This article describes work on the tunnels which began simultaneously in January 1990.
