POLYESTER POLYMER CONCRETE CHALLENGES MIXER CAPABILITY

The deck of the 6215-ft-long, 74-ft-wide Benicia-Martinez Bridge in northern California was rehabilitated using polyester polymer concrete (PSPC). The subcontractor, Tera-Lite, San Jose, California, faced several challenges, including (1) maintaining the density of the PSPC at 97%; (2) motorist concern about styrene emissions from the resin; and (3) resin storage. This article discusses how these challenges were met, including the extensive modification of an existing mixer to allow careful regulation of the contents of the mixture and to blend and compact it more thoroughly than other machines.
